1. Use the Right Equipment

A great start is dressing for the part. Be sure to wear the right type of clothing and use all the right kinds of equipment. Boots and pants are always ideal.

Although most closed-toe shoes will work, boots are the best option. You should also refrain from wearing any type of accessories while riding, such as purses or scarves. Make sure the horse has a saddle that’s fitted and never forget to wear your helmet.

2. Use the Reins Gently

When holding onto the reins, remember to stay gentle. Pulling too roughly on the reins can hurt your horse. Whether you hold both reins with one hand or hold onto each rein with one hand, stay relaxed and keep your arms at about a right angle from your elbows.

You’ll steer the horse in the right direction by gently moving the reins either to the left or right. To stop the horse, you’ll gently pull back.

3. Relax and Sit Up Straight

While riding the horse, remember to relax and sit up straight. If you find yourself slouching, try to correct it. Relax your shoulders and place each foot in a stirrup.

Doing all the above will help balance your weight on the horse, which takes some pressure off the horse and prevents you from possibly falling.

4. Greet the Horse Each Time

Each time you’re preparing to ride a horse, make sure you greet the horse. This horse is a living animal and will want to feel safe and comfortable with you riding them in order to get the best experience. A horse can become scared or nervous when a stranger approaches and tried to ride them.

For this reason, it’s always best to build a relationship with the horse, which will boost horse riding confidence for both you and them. To greet the horse, extend your arm out to the front of it. Make sure the back of your hand is facing the horse.

Be patient and wait for the horse to approach you and sniff your hand.
